Welcome to Wellington Brain and Spine

Services

The Wellington Brain and Spine team provides expert consultations on all neurosurgical conditions including cranial and spinal conditions.  We have a combined experience over 120 years in the field of neurosurgery.

We are independent Neurosurgeons who believe that the best outcomes for our patients are achieved with a collaborative team based approach.  To ensure that the best options are offered to our patients we undertake multidisciplinary review of complex conditions and collaborate closely with our colleagues in other specialties including ENT (otololaryngology), Oncology, Radiology, Endocrinology, Orthopaedics, Intensive Care, Anaesthetics, Pathology, Rheumatology, and Pain Medicine.  We have a longstanding collaboration with Otolaryngologists  PJ Wormald (Adelaide) and Simon Robinson (Wellington) to undertake endoscopic pituitary surgery and complex extended endoscopic anterior skull base surgery.   There is also a collaboration with Charles Davis, Plastic Surgeon, to provide a Craniofacial surgery service for Central and Sothern New Zealand.

  • Spinal neurosurgery including neural decompressions, spinal fusions, and surgery for spinal tumours.
  • Cranial neurosurgery for brain tumours including pituitary tumours, primary brain tumours, and metastases.
  • Vascular neurosurgery including intracranial aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), and spinal vascular malformations.
  • CSF circulation disorders including hydrocephalus and Chiari malformations.
  • Surgery for trigeminal neuralgia.

Surgery is not always required for the conditions we treat and we counsel our patients on the best available options.  When surgery is required we carefully guide our patients through the process, the risks and benefits, and what to expect in terms of recovery.

Consultations and treatment can be in either the public or private sector.  Most medical insurers will cover private neurosurgery.  In some instances the insurer will provide partial cover.  Depending on circumstances we can advise if treatment is best provided in the public or private sectors.

We provide public consultations in Wellington, Hawkes Bay, Taranaki, Palmerston North, and the Wairarapa.  Private consulting is done at Wakefield Hospital and Southern Cross Hospital in Wellington.  We are also able to undertake Telehealth Consultations.
